Is Your Website Holding You Back?

If you are doing any kind of business on the internet, it is important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends that will make a difference as to whether you will be found when someone searches for your products.

According to a recent research by ComScore, more than 31 percent of Web traffic for top business websites is generated through mobile devices.

That figure is continuing to increase as smartphones have made accessing the Web easy. As most business owners know, your Web design should adapt to the various screen sizes being used to access a site.

There are two ways to do this.  It can be a separate mobile website or a responsive design that adapts to all types of device screen sizes like that of smartphones, desktops, tablets and laptops.

A separate mobile-only site design is more time consuming, expensive and challenging for incorporating changes on a day-to-day basis and often businesses find such maneuvers difficult.

So responsive design that fits all devices is preferred.

Responsive design reduces the bounce rate of the person looking for a product.

Responsive design also increases the loading speed across the devices in comparison to mobile-specific sites  Search engine algorithms now make mobile friendliness a factor for ranking websites.

So if you want to be found in a searcher’s results, responsive design  is essential.

If your website hasn’t been changed or updated in several years, chances are good that it is not mobile responsive.  And if you are using a website builder, make sure that the template you have chosen is mobile responsive.

I was recently looking at different website builders with shopping carts recently because my own website is not working as effectively as it once was and was surprised to learn that Big Commerce only has two mobile responsive templates that are free to use while most of the free templates from Shopify are mobile responsive.

If you had someone else build your site, you need to check to make sure that it is mobile responsive.  There are a number of different sites online where you can test your site.  Some of these are:

http://www.studiopress.com/responsive/

https://www.browserstack.com/responsive

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

If the results are that your site is not mobile responsive, you have some very important work to do.
